About the Church
The mission of Recovery Refuge is to Develop, Establish and Maintain Faith Based Sober Living Residences, which utilize a new 12-month program model that focuses on teaching and IMPLEMENTING programs that teach skills necessary to maintain recovery. Our model includes economic classes that begin immediately with credit repair, continue through the basics of maintaining checking and/or savings accounts, and culminate with home ownership. At the conclusion of the 12-month program, the graduate should have secured government financing either thru USDA or THDA to build or buy an affordable home LOCATED IN our model of a PERMANENT sober living COMMUNITY. This community shall have an HOA type governing body, led by community leaders that are passionate about long term recovery solutions, as well as residents of the recovery community itself, with long time recovery. They would be leaders but they would not govern, in adherence to the 12 traditions. All active residents interested in attending community business meetings and voting on issues would be permitted to do so, unless there were good reason, and majority agreement otherwise. This permanent recovery housing community would include a clubhouse, without facilities, community laundry, playground/park and picnic areas, all to strengthen the individual and the community ties that bind us together, as stated in 12 step literature. - community of those in recovery is VITAL. We need each other, not just while we are in sober living, in rehab, or during a meeting. We must be willing to admit we need each other PERMENANTLY. Those suffering from substance abuse disorders and/ or co-occuring disorders do not do well alone. Isolation leads to destruction for us, and more costs that will eventually burden racists and officials. The only people able to effectively help us to MAINTAIN LONG TERM sobriety are those who have been where we are, and can share their experience, strength and hope, was well as hold use accountable when they suspect they are headed for a relapse. They are the ones that see through manipulation, call us on our BS, and are there to help us use the tools of recovery, and also to pick up those of us that falter, should we fall down. Help will be readily available to hopefully prevent as many from continuing a downward spiral as the way to one of the expected ends: jails, institutions, or, worse, death. As these communities evolve, we hope to slowly begin to slow down, then eventually begin to REVERSE this vicious, never ending cycle. Relapses would not be as catastrophic, in our humble opinions, with others who know how to best deal with such unfortunate situations, ones who have been there, will offer love, guidance and support, but will AT ALL TIMES tell them like it is. This can seem harsh say times to those who do not fully understand addiction. Recovering addicts understand how to support an addict that's on shaky ground WITHOUT enabling them or becoming codependant. This idea of a PERMANENT community would also alleviate the proverbial risk associated with allowing children to be in recovery treatment facilities or environments due to insurance. The only residents allowed in the permanent phase will have graduated, repaired their credit and qualified for low income government housing, so if they reunite with significant others and children, they are residing in their OWN home which mitigates the risk associated with being in San environments where all levels of recovering addicts are under the same roof or "facility, or institution". Volunteers with expertise in childhood trauma associated with the family unit could offer support to children, codependant partners and the like. ADDICTION IS A FAMILY DISEASE. This model addresses that elephant in the room as well. Another valuable part of the program would be mandatory Certified Peer Recovery Specialist training before graduation, to continue the current movement towards achieving long term recovery, by using the solution that indisputedly works best, that of a peer that has suffered the same maladies. The most beautiful thing about this scenario is the peer inevitably helps themselves BY HELPING another person. It's a 2 for 1 plus much more when compared with price tag associated with current models, which are all only a PIECE of the puzzle. Addiction must be treated holistically, and include all phases and a PERMANENT community living solution in order to BREAK cycles in families. It is, in our opinion, the only way on the long road home. The therapeutic value of one addict helping another is WITHOUT PARALLEL, and was never intended to be temporary. These permanent housing communities would also provide close access to community resources that can be used, as needed and, at intended, to help PREVENT relapses. Communities would also partner with local law enforcement officers that fully understand addiction, and have a passion to help those that have demonstrated they ARE TRYING and on the right road in recovery. These officers could build invaluable relationships in these communities built on trust. When residents & family members experience issues, or are in fear for the life of their lives one, they would begin to feel comfortable reaching out to law enforcement for help, that, otherwise, under normal circumstances would not be possible, out of fear, until it is usually, unfortunately, too little, too late They would slowly learn and hopefully be able to trust they have officers they feel comfortable reaching out to that have demonstrated they are not on the old LOCK EM UP & THROW AWAY THE KEY mentality, which has, along with many other things, led us to the absolute WORST case scenario we are currently faced with in regards to addiction and the hell on earth that accompanies all those involved. Since these permanent communities would only house graduated, individuals in recovery, law enforcement would also not feel the normal pressure associated with many incidents involving citizens that do not understand addiction when situations arise, at they would be in a segregated community. We know of MANY members of law enforcement whose lives have also been touched in some way by the sting of addiction. Many have lost loved ones, children and the like to this disease. The long term mission of the community as a while would be to lean on one another, and to carry the Message of LONG TERM RECOVERY to Those Struggling With Life Controlling Issues. The ultimate goal is to create a program capable of culminating with the creation of "Permanent Recovery Communities" that share this mission to not only help one another & adhere to 12 step principals, BUT tobcarry the message and be a beacon of hope to the ones still suffering. It would allow communities to save money, time, & resources, with the model's constant, and continuing certification of peer recovery specialists, many of whom may be employable in the recovery field. We are confident with time and program tweaks, evolution and improvements, crime associated with active addiction would slowly but steadily decline, and the model, if successful, would begin a movement towards creating similar communities elsewhere, separate from that mainstream portion of society that neither understand, nor have the desire to help people with these issues, and do not even want them in their neighborhoods and communities, are it sometimes leads to unfortunate incidents. You must understand We are not IN ANY WAY condoning this as OK thinking, We are simply stating the obvious. We also have no desire whatever to take the Free Will of people suffering from substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. We wish to be VERY CLEAR that we want everyone to be totally free to choose where they want to live wherever they please. Ob the contrary, we ONLY WANT residents that share our ideas and belief in permanent housing options for those in recovery is a viable option, which we wish to implement in an attempt to alleviate so many of the current pitfalls that would be avoided by this model. If successful, we are confident that is confirmation it is God's will and we hope it may someday evolve to become one of the new standards and possibly even a preferred course of treatment for MANY.
